Choosing a 3D printer in 2026 is mostly about being honest with yourself: how much do you want to tinker, what do you want to make, and how much space and money do you have? This guide walks through the six things that actually matter, without the spec-sheet noise.

1. Decide how much tinkering you’ll tolerate

This is the single biggest decision. Premium printers such as the Bambu Lab H2C arrive calibrated, level themselves, detect failures and ship with slicer profiles that just work. Cheap printers can produce prints that look just as good, but you’ll be the one levelling the bed, tuning temperatures and diagnosing why the first layer won’t stick. If you enjoy that, it’s part of the hobby. If you don’t, pay for the automation.

2. Pick a technology: FDM or resin

FDM printers melt plastic filament and lay it down layer by layer. They’re the default choice for functional parts, larger objects, and anything you’ll handle. Resin printers cure liquid resin with UV light and produce far finer detail, which is why miniature painters and jewellers love them, but the resin is messy, smells, and needs washing and curing after every print. 3. Enclosed or open frame

An open-frame printer is cheaper and fine for PLA and PETG, the two materials most people use. An enclosure keeps the air around the print warm, which you need for ABS, ASA, nylon and other engineering materials that warp in a draught. It also keeps fingers and pets away from hot parts and quietens the machine. If you’re not sure, an enclosed printer is the more future-proof buy.

4. Build volume: bigger is not always better

Most printers offer a build area somewhere between 180mm and 350mm cubed. A 220mm or 250mm cube covers the vast majority of everyday prints, and large prints take a very long time, so only pay for a big bed if you know you’ll use it. Remember the printer itself is considerably larger than its build area, and a bigger machine needs a sturdier table.

5. Speed and motion system

Modern CoreXY printers move the print head on a fixed gantry and are dramatically faster than the older “bed slinger” design where the bed itself moves back and forth. Advertised speeds are marketing numbers, but the practical difference is real: a print that took a full day on an older machine can finish in a few hours. If you plan to print often, favour CoreXY.

6. Multi-colour and multi-material

Multi-material systems feed several spools into one printer so you can print in multiple colours or use a dissolvable support material. They’re brilliant but they waste filament on every colour change and add cost and complexity. Buy a printer that can add one later rather than paying for it up front, unless you already know you want colour prints.

Things people forget to budget for

  • Filament. A 1kg spool of decent PLA costs roughly the price of a takeaway and lasts a surprisingly long time. Buy from a known brand for your first few spools.
  • Somewhere to put it. Printers are noisy and PLA smells faintly sweet when printing. A spare room, garage or well-ventilated corner is ideal.
  • Filament storage. Filament absorbs moisture and prints badly when damp. A sealed box with silica gel is enough for most people.
  • Spare nozzles and a build plate. Both wear out. A textured PEI plate is the best upgrade a budget printer can get.
